Abstract
In this paper we study the determinants of direct and indirect export performance of firms in Central and Eastern European (CEE) and MENA countries jointly and separately for different subgroups of countries. In particular, we address three research questions: (i) Do the firms which participate in the global value chains through indirect exports display the same characteristics as those that export directly their products, (ii) is the role of human capital, R&D and innovations in export performance the same for the firms which export directly and indirectly, (iii) is there geographical differentiation of firm level determinants of export performance for firm the firms which export directly and indirectly? The analysis is based on information on individual firms contained in the BEEPS V data base, and covers the period of 2011-2014 which yields a total of over 17,000 observations. We estimate the probability of exports controlling for country and sector specific effects using the probit model. We find that product innovations are more important than process innovations in determining direct export performance for the whole sample of countries. In addition, we find that for the whole sample of countries the level of firm productivity, spending on R&D, human capital, foreign licenses and foreign ownership are important in determining the export performance for the firms which export directly but not in the case of indirect exporters. We also find significant heterogeneity of direct and indirect export firm-level determinants for different subgroups of countries. The study contributes to better understanding of determinants of direct and indirect export performance of firms in CEE and MENA countries.
